Mote Morris House

A Summarized History

In February 1889, Edward H. Mote bought the property at 1021 W. Main Street.
1892 – Mote House was constructed for about $9,000.
1908 – Bishop Henry Clay Morrison bought the
house as a retirement home. Electricity and more
was added to the house while the Morrisons owned it.
1918 – The home was sold to John S. and May James Morris. A member of the Morris family lived in the house for the next 70 years. The Morris’s had two children, one before and one while living in the house, John and Robert.
1950s – Son Robert moved his family into the house to care for his aging mother, May. His father, John S. Morris, had died several years earlier. Robert and his wife Georgiana raised four children in the house: Robert Jr., John III, Daniel J., and Carol Ann.
1973 – May J. Morris died, and the house was willed to Robert and Georgiana.

Dec. 27, 1974 – Mote-Morris House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Aug. 1988 – Mote-Morris House purchased by Morrison United Methodist Church. The church offered the house to whoever would move it.
Sep. 1, 1990 – Mote-Morris House relocated to 1195 West Magnolia Street from 1021 West Main Street. The 150-ton house was moved one block south and two blocks west at the cost of $95,000 raised by the community.
Nov. 23, 1996 – After six years and more than $400,000 in city and state grant funds, people were invited to the Gala Grand opening of the restored Mote-Morris House.
Feb. 20, 2018 – About a third of the house was destroyed by fire.
June 1, 2021 – House was repaired and opened with a ribbon cutting.
